With the construction almost complete we are now into the final stages of returning the Gifford to full operation. As usual and well remembered by those who used the Gifford in it's previous life, the shutter requires constant attention but with the use of modern technology this should be less of an ongoing issue. It seems somewhat appropriate that Duncan, as the last of the observatory directors who fought the shutter last in the mid 1970s should be up a ladder doing it again as the observatory returns to life.

First light is now eagerly awaited by all those who have been involved.
